The Historic Mounds Theatre was built in 1922 and is located at 1029
Hudson Road in Saint Paul. It was used for live vaudeville shows, as
well as movies until the 1930’s. It had a stage and a small orchestra
pit in addition to a movie screen. The theatre closed in the 1960’s.
In 1999, the theatre was given to the Portage for Youth, a nonprofit
for young women located in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood. The
purpose of the donation, was to create an arts and culture center for
a highly underserved community and to create a larger space in which
to house Portage for Youth participants. Renovations began in 2000,during
which time a good many “strange” occurrences were happening
to workers and staff alike. These occurrences were first “brushed
aside” as the building was old, but in 2001, the “professionals”
were called in to investigate. Investigators came through in droves:
the MN Paranormal Investigators Group, headed by John Savage, Echo Bodine,
MN psychic/medium and ghostbuster, Carol Lowell from C/O the Center,
as well as other groups, too numerous to mention. All concluded after
extensive investigations, that the theater was definitely haunted. All
agreed, that there were at least three resident ghosts and a number
of other spirits who regularly visit the theater. Some even sit in the
auditorium and watch shows, alongside the living members of the audience.
Is the Mounds Theatre really one of the most haunted
places in the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis? Would you like
to find out? If so, the Mounds Theatre is offering a chance
for four people per night (two nights available) to spend the evening
hours in the theatre, communing with our resident spirits. You will
have a chance to meet the “man in the projection booth, the little
girl who bounces a ball on stage and the very unhappy usher, who walks
the isles, looking for his lost love. Skeptic or believer, you be the
judge.
In addition to spending the night in the theatre, participants
will be able to go on a mini investigation with the MN Ghost Hunters
Society who will lead participants in a mini investigation, helping
the teams learn how to set up cameras, take pictures and ask the proper
questions during the ghost hunt to achieve the best results from both
EVP and physical manifestations. They will talk to the teams about what
they can expect from the spirits at the theater to help give them a
better understanding of what the night may hold.
Here’s how the contest works. There will be two nights
available to groups of up to four who would like to spend the night
at the theatre. Groups that are interested will bid for the privilege.
Winner will be the high bidder. All bids must be placed by May 1, 2008.
